"TSARSKOE SELO" - meaning "the village of the tsar" received its name after being presented to the future empress, wife of Peter the Great in 1710. The land became the luxurious park with magnificent Alexander Palace and the Palace Church settled beside. The famous Catherine Park is punctuated with a host of pavilions designed by such famous architects as Antonio Rinaldi and Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Picturesque bridges, sculptures and romantic pergolas surround the mirror of the Great Pond.
Visit the palace museum that houses remarkable collections of paintings, porcelain, furniture and fabrics; explore Rastrelli's Grand Hall in the Great Palace and the Portrait Hall with its canvases by Dutch, Flemish, Italian and French artists. The gem of the Palace is the splendid Amber Room that disappeared during the World War II but was returned recently. Golden mirrors of this palace remember reflections of Russian Emperors and holds the name of the last empress Alexandra that loved to draw her initials with the diamond ring. Tsarskoe selo, the preferred residence of the last tsar Nicolas II, is the splendid fragment of the Atlantida of the Russian Imperia.
