One of the miracles of St.Petersburg is its bridges. The city is built on the delta of the River Neva and is spread out over numerous islands of varying sizes, frequently prompting the nickname the "City of 101 Islands" or even "North Venice". Over the centuries numerous bridges were built to connect these islands across the various tributaries of the Neva and the city's many canals. When the river isn't frozen, during nighttime the bridges move apart allowing ships to pass up and down the river. Careless travelers can be caught on the wrong side of the river and have to wait till bridges are drawn together again. The drawing of bridges attracts numerous spectators carried away by this extraordinary show.
