- PAVLOVSK
- When you first come to Pavlovsk and enter the area of the cosy Palace you are met by the splendid figure - a monument of a smiling man, leaning over his walking stick, wearing the camisole of XIX century. This is the owner of the palace - his majesty the Grand Prince of Russia later the Emperor Pavel I. He gave his name to the palace and the estate. The ownership of the emperor is built by a constellation of amazing artists among whom are Charles Cameron from Scotland, Vincenzo Brenna and Carlo Rossi; many Russian masters and that unsurpassed master of perspective painting and genius of landscape gardening Pietro Gonzaga.
Constructed on a hill, the palace takes in the earliest and the latest rays of the sun. The rising sun is reflected in the mirrors of the halls and the palace seems to be lit from within like a precious stone. Let the palace of the emperor-mason lead you through its exceptional pastoral and the sophistication of the past.
- Open: 10am - 5pm
Closed: Fridays and the first Monday of every month
Location: 20 ulitsa Revolyutsii 189623 Pavlovsk
- GATCHINA
- The Gatchina palace and park ensemble is one of the finest specimens of early Russian Neoclassicism. The palace, faced with local limestone and resembling a medieval English castle, was erected between 1766 and 1781. The interior decor was created by Russian masters according to designs by Rinaldi and Vincenzo Brenna.
The palace's former art collections containing Russian and Western European paintings, porcelains, and Oriental objets d'art, are gradually being restored to their former owner. Visitors can also explore a mysterious subterranean passageway leading from the palace to the Echo grotto. The Gatchina gardens and parks are laid out in a picturesque fashion and abound with diverse vegetation, planted with due regard to the different hues of leaves and needles. There are numerous bridges, terraces and spectacular stone staircases.
Gatchina a real pearl of Gardening and Russian Architecture.
Open: 11am - 5pm
Closed: Mondays and the first Tuesday of every month
Location: 1 Krasnoarmeiskaya ulitsa 188300 Gatchina
- ORANIENBAUM
- Oranienbaum, what a strange name for Russia! Indeed it is, meaning "an orange-tree" in German but sounding graciously in Russian it was picked up for the name of the Palace. Settled on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland Oranienbaum became the summer residence of the future emperor Peter III. The architect was the famous Rinaldi.
The rooms of the palace abound with painted panels, intricate stuccowork and parquetry designs. On display is a collection of 17th and 18th century Western European paintings. The highlight of the estate, the Chinese Palace - is a splendid monument of Rococo architecture. Its interiors are striking for the wealth and variety of their decor. If you are a nature lover and rococco admirer - this pleasant suburb excursion is for you.
